What is a skylight diffuser and what does it do?
A skylight diffuser is the chosen section of glazing that is visible, from the inside, when looking up at your skylight. The diffuser sits neatly inside the ceiling surround which is fitted into the ceiling. A diffuser works in spreading the outside light evenly into your home or office. It is also one of the steps of the glazing process which helps difuser the amount of heat allowed in.
What is the difference between the diffusers?
Skylight diffusers not only look different but they can have varying degrees of performance. For instance, a prismatic diffuser will let more light in, while a dark opal will diffuse more heat. All diffuser options are valuable glazing solutions. In the end it really does come down to a matter of taste, and what look you would prefer for your home. Professional advice will be given in cases of small roof cavities where heat transfer has to be taken into consideration. In these cases you can still keep the desired diffuser look at ceiling level but we would suggest extra glazing on the roof level instead.
Our Skylight diffusers are modern in design and sit flush to the ceiling. They are not the old fashioned bubble variety.
A prismatic skylight diffuser lets in the most amount of light. They have a rough surface and are made up of numerous tiny individual triangular shapes. You may have seen them surrounding a fluro light fitting.
Light Opal Diffuser
The light opal diffuser is opaque in appearance and diffuses more light than the prismatic variety. It has a smooth polished finish, like a frosted glass. The light Opal diffuses more heat than the prismatic diffuser.
Dark Opal Diffuser
The dark opal diffuser is white in appearance and is white in colour, it is not transparent. The dark opal diffuses the most amount of light and heat. Ideal on a metal deck roof where there is very little ceiling cavity.
Leadlight and glass diffusers are a custom made item and have to made to order. In such cases the turn around can be up to 2 weeks.
