Can I replace just the damaged part of my skylight?

Yes. In many cases, a damaged dome, diffuser, ceiling frame, shaft or other component can be replaced without replacing the entire skylight. The first step is identifying which part has actually failed and checking its measurements before ordering.

Do I need to replace the whole skylight if the dome is broken?

Not necessarily. If the roof flashing and the rest of the skylight are still serviceable, it may be possible to replace only the damaged dome. Replacement domes are available in a range of round, square and rectangular sizes. How do I know whether my skylight dome or diffuser is damaged?

The dome is the exterior cover located on the roof, while the diffuser is the interior panel visible from inside the room. Check the visual diagram above and identify which problem best matches your situation.

Can an old skylight be repaired if replacement parts are no longer available?

Often, yes. Many older skylights have no visible brand or model number. But replacement components can often be matched using their shape and measurements. In some situations, a compatible replacement part or conversion solution may be available.

Should I repair or replace an ageing skylight?

It depends on the condition of the complete skylight. If only one component is damaged or deteriorated, replacing that part may be the simplest solution. If several components have failed, the flashing is badly deteriorated or there are ongoing problems, replacing the complete skylight may be more practical.
