Domes are the clear or opal acrylic covers fitted to the top of roof-mounted skylights. They allow natural light into your space while providing protection from weather, debris, and impact. Over time, domes can become brittle, cracked, or discoloured due to UV exposure, hail, and general wear. Replacing the dome alone is often a practical and cost-effective way to restore light performance without replacing the full skylight system.

Understanding skylight dome types

Domes are typically manufactured from UV-stabilised acrylic and are available in clear and opal (diffused) finishes. Clear domes maximise light transmission and outward visibility, while opal domes soften glare and distribute light more evenly through the room. Dome profiles and heights can vary depending on the skylight system and roof type.

When replacement is appropriate

Dome replacement is recommended when the acrylic shows signs of cracking, yellowing, or impact damage. Older domes can also lose clarity and strength over time, reducing both light quality and weather resistance. If the skylight base and flashing remain in good condition, replacing only the dome can restore performance without the cost of a full skylight replacement.

Compatibility and fit considerations

Skylight domes are not universally interchangeable. Fit depends on the skylight base profile, fixing method, and accurate external measurements. Measuring the outside dimensions of the existing dome and noting the fixing style helps ensure a suitable replacement can be supplied. Some older or discontinued skylight models may require custom sizing or special order domes.

Measuring and ordering guidance

Accurate measurements are essential for correct fit. Measure the external width and length (or diameter for round domes) at the widest point of the existing dome. Noting the dome height and fixing method can also help confirm compatibility before ordering. Where measurements are unclear, providing photos of the existing skylight can assist with identification and fit checks.
