Yellow Skylight Diffuser Replacement
Most residential skylights use round ceiling diffusers, which is why mostly the round diffuser range is shown below.
| Why your skylight has turned yellow
Most skylights installed in Australian homes use a plastic ceiling diffuser.
Over time this plastic can turn yellow, brittle or cloudy due to UV exposure and age.
If your skylight has started to look yellow, replacing the diffuser is usually a simple and inexpensive fix that restores natural light back into the room.
Skybrite supplies replacement skylight diffusers in the most common Australian sizes.
Signs Your Skylight Diffuser Needs Replacing
You may need to replace your skylight diffuser if you notice:
• Yellow or discoloured plastic
• Cloudy or dull skylight light
• Cracked diffuser cover
• Brittle plastic around the edge
• Uneven light coming through the skylight
This usually happens after 10–20 years of UV exposure.
Fortunately the diffuser can normally be replaced without replacing the entire skylight.
In some cases it is actually the ceiling surround that has yellowed, not the diffuser.
This can easily be mistaken for a diffuser problem.
If the yellow plastic is part of the ceiling frame, you may need to replace the surround instead.

What Is a Skylight Diffuser?
The skylight diffuser is the plastic ceiling cover that spreads the incoming daylight evenly into the room.
It is sometimes called:
-
Skylight cover
-
Skylight ceiling lens
-
Skylight diffuser panel
-
Skylight plastic cover
When this plastic ages it can turn yellow or opaque, reducing the amount of light entering the room.
Replacing the diffuser restores the skylight back to its original brightness.
How To Measure Your Skylight Diffuser
Most skylight diffusers are measured by the diameter of the diffuser. Or if it smashed measuring the inside of the ceiling opening.
