Benefits of Replacement Skylight Domes
There are several common reasons why a skylight dome may need replacement:
Damage
Skylight domes are exposed to the elements and can be damaged by hail, falling debris, or severe weather. A cracked or broken dome should be replaced promptly to maintain the skylight’s integrity, prevent leaks, and avoid further structural issues.
Age and Wear
Over time, domes can deteriorate due to prolonged exposure to sunlight and environmental conditions. They may become discoloured, brittle, or develop surface cracks. Replacing an aged dome restores both the appearance and performance of your skylight.
Energy Efficiency
Older domes often lack the insulation performance of modern designs. Upgrading to an energy-efficient replacement can reduce heat loss in winter and minimise heat gain in summer, improving comfort while lowering energy costs.
Design and Functionality Upgrades
Replacement domes provide the opportunity to modernise your skylight. New options are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, allowing you to select a style that enhances your home’s architecture and optimises natural light.
Replacing a skylight dome may be necessary to address damage, restore performance, improve energy efficiency, or update the look of your skylight. Choosing a genuine, high-quality replacement dome that is compatible with your existing system ensures proper installation, reliable performance, and long-term durability.

Measuring a Round Replacement Skylight Dome
To ensure a correct fit, follow these steps when measuring for a round replacement skylight dome:
Measure the Diameter
Using a tape measure, record the width of the existing dome from edge to edge, passing through the center. This provides the overall diameter from flange to flange.
Measure the Flange
The flange is the lip or edge of the dome that rests on the roof flashing. Measure its width across to confirm that the replacement dome will seat securely on your existing skylight flashing.
Measure the Height
Record the vertical height of the dome from the base to the highest point. This ensures you select a replacement with a suitable profile.
Note Additional Features
If the dome includes special features—such as a ventilation opening or integrated shading—be sure to record these details so the replacement meets your functional requirements.
Check for Obstructions
Inspect the roof area for nearby vents, pipes, or structures that could affect the fit or installation. Confirm that the new dome will sit properly without interference.
Once you have gathered these measurements, select a replacement skylight dome that matches your existing unit’s dimensions and features. If you are uncertain, we recommend consulting with a Skybrite professional to ensure the correct fit for your skylight model.

Square and Rectangle Skylight Dome Replacement
To ensure you select the correct fit, follow these steps when measuring for a square or rectangular replacement skylight dome:
Measure the Length and Width
Measure the length and width of the skylight opening from edge to edge. Be sure to measure the actual roof opening (throat size), not the external dimensions of the existing dome. This will provide the accurate dimensions required for replacement.
Measure the Flange
The flange is the lip or edge of the dome that rests on the roof flashing. Record the flange dimensions carefully to confirm that the replacement dome will sit securely on your skylight base.
Note Additional Features
If the dome includes special features—such as a ventilation ring or integrated shade—make sure to record these details to ensure the replacement dome meets your requirements.
Once you have these measurements, you can select a replacement skylight dome that matches both the dimensions and features of your existing unit.

How to Install Replacement Skylight Domes
Installing a replacement skylight dome generally involves removing the old dome, preparing the area, and fitting the new one. Follow these steps as a general guide:
Prioritise Safety
Before beginning, ensure you have appropriate safety equipment such as gloves and safety glasses. Use a stable ladder or scaffolding for secure access to the skylight.
Remove the Existing Dome
Carefully undo the screws or fasteners securing the old dome. Keep track of their placement and order to assist with reinstallation.
Clean the Skylight Area
Clear away any debris, dirt, or old sealant from around the skylight opening. The surface must be clean and dry to ensure a proper seal for the new dome.
Inspect the Flashing
Check the skylight flashing for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Repair or replace any affected components before installing the new dome.
Position the Replacement Dome
Place the new skylight dome over the flashing, ensuring it is properly centered and aligned.
Secure the Dome
Insert the screws or fasteners through the dome’s pre-drilled holes into the frame. Tighten them evenly and securely, but avoid over-tightening to prevent damage to the dome, flashing, or rubber grommets (if applicable).
Note: Installation procedures may vary depending on the specific skylight and dome model. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
Skylight Dome Material
How do I measure a round replacement skylight dome?
Measure the dome edge-to-edge across the widest point (diameter). Also measure the skylight throat/roof opening to confirm the model and compatible parts.
Are your dome sizes listed edge-to-edge or nominal?
All replacement skylight domes on our site are listed by edge-to-edge measurements.
What materials are available?
We supply acrylic and polycarbonate domes. Both are UV-resistant; polycarbonate offers higher impact resistance, while acrylic provides excellent optical clarity.
How long is dispatch for replacement domes?
Most stocked domes dispatch within 48–72 hours (Mon–Fri). Custom or special orders may require additional lead time.
